KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan—The opening of the Divine Performing Arts Chinese Spectacular in Kaoshiung on Tuesday was a resounding success, garnering much praise from the audience.
The County Labor Recreation Center was filled to capacity and the delighted audience gave a standing ovation at the end of the show.
"Very good," said Yang Qiu Xing, the commissioner of Kaohsiung County, who attended the show with his wife.
"The choreography, dancing, and drumming are all very good and the stories are all well selected from Chinese ancient fables. I am very satisfied with the performance."
The commissioner mentioned some of the acts he particularly enjoyed.
"The Lady of the Moon is wonderful. The choreography was a good way to promote the meaning of the show. Also, the drumming was so splendid. It is a show of a very high standard. I really like it," he added.
Mrs. Yang was very surprised at the speed with which the performers changed their clothes between the acts. She said the dancers' movements and form were "very natural."
"I feel that all dancing teachers should come to watch this show… I especially liked the movements of the Drummers of the Tang Court, it was very good and well coordinated."
Mrs. Yang commented on the professionalism of the production.
"It is truly very good. Taiwan has drumming performances too, but the movement of the Spectacular is swift and very well coordinated. The stage is not that big, but many performers are able to coordinate so well under the circumstances. It is not easy, but actually very hard—everyone has to have correct movements all the time and cannot make mistakes. I think they must have received very good training. The softness in the movements is just right too."
Lee Tsai-o, a famous dance instructor in Taiwan, was impressed with every aspect of the show.
"The Divine Performing Arts has exhibited much strength and beauty in the performances. Every program is good, which indicates that their personal cultivation is profound. Every performer, both males and females, have expressed their individuality. Every program has made me feel very well. I am infatuated, very infatuated," said Lee.
She especially enjoyed the invigorating Drummers of the Tang Court.
"In the Drummers of the Tang Court performance, the sound is bright and powerful, indeed it is wonderful! It takes me, an 83-year-old woman, back to my teenage years again and back to my youth. Thank you very much."
The current CEO of the 2009 World Games in Kaohsiung, KOC Chi Chen, also attended the Spectacular . Chen once called "the Eastern flying antelope" by the international sports community.
"The show tonight is a wondrous experience. Every program is superb and its spiritual significance is very touching," said Chi Chen.
Ye Yu-Mei, secretary of the National Gymnastic Association, attended the show with Chi Chen.
"The Chinese Spectacular is a marvelous and delightful performance. I am very much moved by The Loyalty of Yue Fei, which incorporated "benevolence" into the story. It is of great fortune to see such a high-quality show."
Gong Rui-Zhang, president of Cheng Shiu University, said it is a rare opportunity to be able to see a show such as the Spectacular . He praised the costumes and music, the vocal solos, and the overall professionalism of the performers.
Chen-Chao-Long, president of Kaohsiung's Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, said he enjoyed everything about the show. He added that he was familiar with some of the historic stories in the Spectacular, which he feels can have a very positive effect. What impressed him most was the first program, Descent of the Celestial Kings, which "really lives up to its name."
